The profession

What a dispatcher does and gets paid for

Trucks move 72.7% of all US freight by weight (ATA data). A load and an empty truck don't find each other on their own — the dispatcher works between them.

Broker

owns the freight

Gets the freight from the shipper and looks for a carrier to haul it. Posts loads on a load board such as DAT.

Dispatcher

works for the carrier

Finds loads for trucks, calls brokers, negotiates the rate, and runs the load through delivery. Works remotely, from any country.

Carrier

owns the truck

A trucking company or an owner-operator. Usually pays the dispatcher a percentage of the rate on each load.

One load through a dispatcher's eyes

Honest about income. A dispatcher's earnings depend on the number of trucks, market rates, and your experience. Any income figure is a market guideline, not a promise.
